JOY School of Yoga

JOY’S 200-hour professional certification program is a great launching pad to begin teaching yoga, and a fantastic way to deepen your personal practice. You will gain the confidence and technical skills you need to create inspiring, joyful and safe classes, that will truly touch the hearts and lives of others.

Our School of Yoga draws its inspiration primarily from the Kripalu Yoga tradition and interweaves the rich teachings of Buddhist meditation. It is designed in ten weekend intensives, with a class size limited to 14. This format will give you time to integrate the material and gain a supportive Sangha (community) with your piers and teachers.

During this training you will

  • Be introduced to yogic history and the teachings of Swami Kripalu
  • Discover how the rich philosophy of yoga relates to our daily lives
  • Learn how to teach students to develop mindfulness, loving-kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity
  • Develop skills for designing well-rounded classes, including centering, pranayama, warm-ups, asana, relaxation, loving-kindness meditation and chanting
  • Experience the art of sequencing safe and inspiring classes
  • Gain a deep knowledge of alignment principles in asanas
  • Learn to see and understand body structure and movement
  • Learn Injury Prevention
  • Gain precise language to compassionately communicate with your students
  • Work with approaches to assisting students in asana, including hands-on techniques and demonstrations
  • Learn introductory anatomy for yoga
  • Have many opportunities to practice teaching

2008 SCHEDULE & ADMINISTRATIONS
10 Weekend intensives, 16.5hr each.
In addition to the program sessions, home practice, independent study assignments and monthly class observations are required to integrate the material learned in class.
SCHEDULE
Friday: 7:30pm-10:00pm (2.5hr)
Saturday: 1:00-4:30 & 5:30-9:00 (7hr)
Sunday: 8:30am–12:00pm & 1:30-5:00pm (7hr)

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Our minimum requirements for admission are the following:
  1. At least two years of consistent yoga practice with an experienced and certified yoga teacher.
  2. A letter of recommendation from a certified yoga teacher.
  3. Completed application form.
  4. Attend 4 classes at Joy of Yoga Studio with Kelly McGrath by February 28, 2008. These classes provide you and the faculty with an opportunity to determine whether this course is right for you. Applicants living outside the greater Montreal will be given special consideration.
  5. $200.00 application fee.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  1. Full attendance of program.
  2. All trainees must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of yogic concepts and practices by successfully completing all assignments, monthly practice-teach sessions and final written exam.
  3. Class observation and assisting: All YTT trainees must observe and/or assist 10 community classes at JOYS during the YTT period, taught by YTT directors, and hand in a short written report.
  4. Full payment of tuition.
Teachers in Training in the greater Montreal area are highly encouraged to attend at least 2 classes per week at JOYS during the training period. A 20- class pass will be given to all YTT participants (included in the tuition price). Applicants living outside the greater Montreal area will be given special consideration.

Those who successfully complete this program will be Certified Hatha Yoga Teachers, trained in the Kripalu tradition at 200 hours. Please note, that those who go on to complete the 500-hour professional level program at the Kripalu Center, will then be granted Certified Kripalu Yoga teachers.





FACULTY

Director

Kelly Mcgrath, owner of the Joy of Yoga Studio and director of Yoga Teacher Training, is a certified and experienced Kripalu Yoga Instructor and Shiatsu Massage Practitioner. Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Kelly began practicing yoga as a young girl in the 1970's with her mother. After many years of globe trekking, and studying Fine Arts at Emily Carr College of Art & Design in Vancouver, Kelly realized her true passion was right under her nose all along, which led her to the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health (Lenox, Mass, U.S.A.) where she received her professional training and certification as a yoga teacher. She then settled in her favorite city, Montreal, and founded the Joy of Yoga Studio.

Kelly’s classes are high in demand, as she has inspired and taught countless through community yoga classes, workshops, conferences, and yoga teacher training. She is a compassionate and knowledgeable teacher, whose classes are challenging, safe and infused with spirit to uplift the heart.

She specializes in teaching advanced asana and sequencing, yoga for a healthy menstrual cycle, restorative yoga, and loving-kindness meditation. Kelly is also dedicated to maintaining a regular Buddhist meditation practice.

Over the years, Kelly has discovered that integrating Yoga and Buddhist meditation has provided a beautiful opportunity to experience steady presence, openness, health, joy and insight.

Co-Teacher

Mélanie Chevarie, co-teacher of Yoga Teacher Training at the Joy of Yoga Studio, is a certified Hatha Yoga Teacher. Born and raised in the Magdalene Islands, Quebec; at the early age of 19, Melanie ventured off to travel through out India and Asia to pursue spiritual study. She later moved to New York City to work at National Geographic and to study Yoga, Buddhist scriptures and meditation, and became involved in counseling for rape/incest victims and worked as a doula in prenatal care. Eventually, Melanie attained professional Yoga Teacher Training at two on New York’s most renowned school’s: Laughing Lotus and Om Yoga Center. After which, she co-founded Kusala Yoga Center, NYC.

Mélanie has since moved back to her native Canada and has settled in Montreal where she is continuing her passion for yoga & Buddhist meditation through study & teaching, and is perusing to become a midwife.

Mélanie is experienced at leading vipasana meditation groups and is known to give inspiring Dharma talks, which are captivating, heart felt and based on her own experience. She is also known for her unique ability to see beauty in others. This warmth is often felt in her presence, leaving people feeling nurtured, un-judged and supported.
