kelly's winter teaching theme
Living in Quebec, winter represents cold temperatures, crisp air and short day light hours. This makes it a natural time of hibernation. During this season, yoga teaches us to take extra care to make sure we’re feeling balanced. This can be explored with an energizing practice of standing poses to keep us warm and grounded, and forward bends to encourage and inward journey of mindfulness and contemplation for those days of hibernation. And of coarse, shoulder openers, to prevent them from sneaking up to the ears on cold days.
If you’re not getting enough sunlight, it’s important to do your best to avoid the winter blues (SAAD). A great way to beat this is with inversions. These are yoga poses that turn you upside down. They range from physically challenging headstands to calming restorative poses like lying on your back with your legs up against a wall; depending on what’s right for you. There are many benefits to inversions: they boost the immune system to beat colds and flu, balance the hormonal system, which soothes emotions. They can be uplifting, energizing, or deeply relaxing, and are like taking a natural anti-depressant.
Meditation & Contemplation themes this winter will include:
The Yamas, by Patanjali
Inspired from Buddhism:
Calm Abiding Meditation
Metta / Loving-Kindness Meditation
