What is Shiatsu? Shiatsu Massage is a whole body/mind approach to healing that draws extensively upon the principles of Traditional Oriental Medicine (T.O.M). Originating in Japan at the turn of the twentieth century, when translated, Shiatsu literally means « finger pressure ». It unites methods of Japanese massage with techniques of physical manipulation. What are the benefits? Shiatsu is an effective means to treating a variety of conditions and discomforts, and can be used to compliment western medicine and therapies. Many people have found that Shiatsu will heighten your sense of well being, leaving you feeling open and free from tension, and will help maintain balance of body/mind health at your optimal peak. Conditions that benefit from Shiatsu Massage treatments: · Muscular problems such as back, neck and shoulder pain · Poor circulation · Sciatica · Headaches and migraines · Digestive problems such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, nausea and indigestion · Menstrual complications including severe pain and PMS · Psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, restless thoughts, extreme emotions, lack of concentration and insomnia · Reoccurring colds and flues · The list Continues The longer a person suffers from an impeded flow of energy, the more severe the symptoms will become. An acute condition may turn into one which is chronic. How Does Shiatsu Work? According to T.O.M., the body has 12 classical pathways of vital energy (Ki), known as meridians, with specific points of access (tsubos). These meridians pass along the front wall (or Fascia) of the muscles, each supplying energy to specific organs and systems, ensuring nurturing Ki throughout your whole body/mind. As an area along a meridian becomes either blocked or depleted, physical and or emotional well being can be effected, causing discomfort or illness. By concentrating various Shiatsu techniques on the tsubos and meridians, imbalances can be corrected, restoring your sense of well being. Pregnancy is a special time to be cherished but will place great demands upon your physical body and spirit. It is important to prepare your general health and emotional wellbeing from the moment you decide to have children. A specialized gentle shiatsu session may be an appropriate complimentary therapy to assist you through your preparation, as well to ease your pregnancy, birth and post-natal recovery. Symptoms that may be relieved are fatigue; nausea; heartburn; lower back pain and tired legs. Relaxation is always included to soothe your body and mind. Partners and/or support person are welcome to learn techniques that may be practiced together at home, either by private consultation or through workshops. |
